BACKGROUND: A healthy, well-balanced diet plays an essential role in respiratory diseases. Since micronutrient deficiency is relatively common in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), micronutrient supplementation might have the beneficial health effects in those patients. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to demonstrate the impact of micronutrient supplementation on the lung function of patients with COPD. METHODS: The PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases were searched from their corresponding creation until February 2024. Search terms included 'chronic obstructive pulmonary disease', 'COPD', 'micronutrients', 'dietary supplements', 'vitamins', 'minerals', and 'randomized controlled trials'. Meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the effects of micronutrient supplementation alone or complex on lung function in patients with COPD. RESULTS: A total of 43 RCTs fulfilled the inclusion criteria of this study. Meta-analysis revealed that vitamin D supplementation could significantly improve FEV1% (WMDdifferences between baseline and post-intervention (de): 6.39, 95% CI: 4.59, 8.18, p < 0.01; WMDpost-intervention indicators (af): 7.55, 95% CI: 5.86, 9.24, p < 0.01) and FEV1/FVC% (WMDde: 6.88, 95%CI: 2.11, 11.65, WMDaf: 7.64, 95% CI: 3.18, 12.10, p < 0.001), decrease the odds of acute exacerbations, and improve the level of T-cell subsets, including CD3+%, CD4+%, CD8+%, and CD4+/CD8+% (all p < 0.01). The effects of compound nutrients intervention were effective in improving FEV1% (WMDde: 8.38, 95%CI: 1.89, 14.87, WMDaf: 7.07, 95%CI: -0.34, 14.48) and FEV1/FVC% (WMDde: 7.58, 95% CI: 4.86, 10.29, WMDaf: 6.00, 95% CI: 3.19, 8.81). However, vitamin C and vitamin E supplementation alone had no significant effects on lung function (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Micronutrient supplementation, such as vitamin D alone and compound nutrients, has improved effect on the lung function of patients with COPD. Therefore, proper supplementation with micronutrients would be beneficial to stabilize the condition and restore ventilation function for COPD patients.

Background: Malnutrition is prevalent in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and is associated with a poor prognosis. Objective: This study aims to assess the prevalence and risk factors of malnutrition in patients with PTB. Methods: Studies related to the prevalence and risk factors of malnutrition in patients with PTB were searched through PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases from January 1990 to August 2022, and two researchers screened the literature, evaluated the quality, and extracted data independently. A random-effects model was used to pool the effect sizes and 95% confidence intervals. Subgroup analysis, meta-regression analysis, and sensitivity analysis were further performed to identify sources of heterogeneity and evaluate the stability of the results. Publication bias was assessed by Doi plot, Luis Furuya-Kanamori (LFK) asymmetry index, funnel plot, and Egger's tests. Results: A total of 53 studies involving 48, 598 participants were identified in this study. The prevalence of malnutrition was 48.0% (95% CI, 40.9-55.2%). Subgroup analysis revealed that malnutrition was more common among male gender (52.3%), bacterial positivity (55.9%), family size over 4 (54.5%), drug resistance (44.1%), residing in rural areas (51.2%), HIV infection (51.5%), Asian (51.5%), and African (54.5%) background. The prevalence of mild, moderate, and severe malnutrition was 21.4%, 14.0%, and 29.4%, respectively. Bacterial positivity (OR = 2.08, 95% CI 1.26-3.41), low income (OR = 1.44, 95% CI 1.11-1.86), and residing in rural areas (OR = 1.51, 95% CI 1.20-1.89) were risk factors of malnutrition in patients with PTB. However, male (OR = 1.04, 95% CI 0.85-1.26) and drinking (OR = 1.17, 95% CI 0.81-1.69) were not risk factors for malnutrition in patients with PTB. Due to the instability of sensitivity analysis, HIV infection, age, family size, smoking, and pulmonary cavity need to be reevaluated. Meta-regression suggested that sample size was a source of heterogeneity of prevalence. The Doi plot and LFK asymmetry index (LFK = 3.87) indicated the presence of publication bias for prevalence, and the funnel plot and Egger's test showed no publication bias for risk factors. Conclusion: This meta-analysis indicated that malnutrition was prevalent in patients with PTB, and bacterial positivity, low income, and those residing in rural areas were risk factors for malnutrition. Therefore, clinical workers should pay attention to screening the nutritional status of patients with PTB and identifying the risk factors to reduce the incidence of malnutrition and provide nutritional interventions early to improve the prognosis in patients with PTB.

RESUMO

In this study, the reaction mechanism underlying the green synthesis of glutaric acid was studied via joint test technology. Density functional theory calculations were used to verify the mechanism. Quantitative analysis of glutaric acid via infrared spectroscopy and HPLC was established. The linear correlation between the two methods was good, from 0.01 to 0.25 g mL-1. The analysis results of the two methods were consistent as the reaction progressed.

RESUMO

We report co-infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and influenza A virus in a patient with pneumonia in China. The case highlights possible co-detection of known respiratory viruses. We noted low sensitivity of upper respiratory specimens for SARS-CoV-2, which could further complicate recognition of the full extent of disease.

Integumentary patterns and colors can differentiate species, sexes, and life changes and can inform on habitat and ecology. However, they are rarely preserved in the fossil record. Here, we report on an extremely well-preserved specimen of the Cretaceous bird Confuciusornis with unprecedented complexity, including small spots on the wings, crest, and throat. Morphological and chemical evidence suggest that these patterns are produced by melanin, but unusual preservation prevents assignment of specific colors. Based on comparisons with extant birds, these patterns were likely used for camouflage, although other functions including sexual signaling cannot be ruled out. Our data show that even more elaborate plumage patterns than the spangles in Anchiornis and stripes in Sinosauropteryx were present at a relatively early stage of avian evolution, showing the significance of coloration and patterning to feather evolution.

The Jurassic Yanliao theropods have offered rare glimpses of the early paravian evolution and particularly of bird origins, but, with the exception of the bizarre scansoriopterygids, they have shown similar skeletal and integumentary morphologies. Here we report a distinctive new Yanliao theropod species bearing prominent lacrimal crests, bony ornaments previously known from more basal theropods. It shows longer arm and leg feathers than Anchiornis and tail feathers with asymmetrical vanes forming a tail surface area even larger than that in Archaeopteryx. Nanostructures, interpreted as melanosomes, are morphologically similar to organized, platelet-shaped organelles that produce bright iridescent colours in extant birds. The new species indicates the presence of bony ornaments, feather colour and flight-related features consistent with proposed rapid character evolution and significant diversity in signalling and locomotor strategies near bird origins.

Pterosaurs were a unique clade of flying reptiles that were contemporaries of dinosaurs in Mesozoic ecosystems. The Pterodactyloidea as the most species-diverse group of pterosaurs dominated the sky during Cretaceous time, but earlier phases of their evolution remain poorly known. Here, we describe a 160 Ma filter-feeding pterosaur from western Liaoning, China, representing the geologically oldest record of the Ctenochasmatidae, a group of exclusive filter feeders characterized by an elongated snout and numerous fine teeth. The new pterosaur took the lead of a major ecological transition in pterosaur evolution from fish-catching to filter-feeding adaptation, prior to the Tithonian (145-152 Ma) diversification of the Ctenochasmatidae. Our research shows that the rise of ctenochasmatid pterosaurs was followed by the burst of eco-morphological divergence of other pterodactyloid clades, which involved a wide range of feeding adaptations that considerably altered the terrestrial ecosystems of the Cretaceous world.

Bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline electrolyte may improve the efficiency of overall water splitting. Nickel cobaltite (NiCo2 O4 ) has been considered a promising electrode material for the OER. However, NiCo2 O4 that can be used as an electrocatalyst in HER has not been studied yet. Herein, we report self-assembled hierarchical NiCo2 O4 hollow microcuboids for overall water splitting including both the HER and OER reactions. The NiCo2 O4 electrode shows excellent activity toward overall water splitting, with 10 mA cm(-2) water-splitting current reached by applying just 1.65 V and 20 mA cm(-2) by applying just 1.74 V across the two electrodes. The synthesis of NiCo2 O4 microflowers confirms the importance of structural features for high-performance overall water splitting.

New photocatalysts (La(3+)-H3PW12O40 and Ce(3+)-H3PW12O40) were prepared, and the degradation activity of these products was evaluated. These photocatalysts were synthesized by the hydrothermal method assisted by PEG-1000 from the reactions of LaCl3 or CeCl3 and phosphotungstic acid. The prepared catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflection spectroscopy (UV-vis) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The catalytic activity of La(3+)-H3PW12O40 and Ce(3+)-H3PW12O40 was evaluated by adopting methyl orange (MO) and Rhodamine B (RhB) as model dyes, and the reaction was carried out under UV- and visible light irradiation.

Superhydrophobic and superoleophilic MnWO4:Dy(3+) microbouquets were successfully fabricated via a facile hydrothermal process. The surface morphologies and chemical composition were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The wettability of the as-synthesized MnWO4:Dy(3+) microbouquet film was studied by measuring the water contact angle (CA). A static CA for water of 165° and a very low sliding angle (SA) were observed, which were closely related to both the MnWO4:Dy(3+) microbouquet structure and chemical modification. Furthermore, the as-prepared MnWO4:Dy(3+) surface showed superhydrophobicity for some corrosive liquids such as aqueous basic and salt solutions.

Inference of colour patterning in extinct dinosaurs has been based on the relationship between the morphology of melanin-containing organelles (melanosomes) and colour in extant bird feathers. When this relationship evolved relative to the origin of feathers and other novel integumentary structures, such as hair and filamentous body covering in extinct archosaurs, has not been evaluated. Here we sample melanosomes from the integument of 181 extant amniote taxa and 13 lizard, turtle, dinosaur and pterosaur fossils from the Upper-Jurassic and Lower-Cretaceous of China. We find that in the lineage leading to birds, the observed increase in the diversity of melanosome morphologies appears abruptly, near the origin of pinnate feathers in maniraptoran dinosaurs. Similarly, mammals show an increased diversity of melanosome form compared to all ectothermic amniotes. In these two clades, mammals and maniraptoran dinosaurs including birds, melanosome form and colour are linked and colour reconstruction may be possible. By contrast, melanosomes in lizard, turtle and crocodilian skin, as well as the archosaurian filamentous body coverings (dinosaur 'protofeathers' and pterosaur 'pycnofibres'), show a limited diversity of form that is uncorrelated with colour in extant taxa. These patterns may be explained by convergent changes in the key melanocortin system of mammals and birds, which is known to affect pleiotropically both melanin-based colouration and energetic processes such as metabolic rate in vertebrates, and may therefore support a significant physiological shift in maniraptoran dinosaurs.

A new ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid- (EDTA-) mediated hydrothermal route to prepare chrysanthemum-shaped samarium orthovanadate (SmVO4) nanocrystals with decavanadate (K6V10O28·9H2O) as vanadium source has been developed. The present hydrothermal approach is simple and reproducible and employs a relatively mild reaction temperature. The EDTA, pH value, and temperature of the reaction systems play important roles in determining the morphologies and growth process of the SmVO4 products. The products have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), photoluminescence spectra (PL), and UV-Vis spectroscopy.

Iridescent feather colors involved in displays of many extant birds are produced by nanoscale arrays of melanin-containing organelles (melanosomes). Data relevant to the evolution of these colors and the properties of melanosomes involved in their generation have been limited. A data set sampling variables of extant avian melanosomes reveals that those forming most iridescent arrays are distinctly narrow. Quantitative comparison of these data with melanosome imprints densely sampled from a previously unknown specimen of the Early Cretaceous feathered Microraptor predicts that its plumage was predominantly iridescent. The capacity for simple iridescent arrays is thus minimally inferred in paravian dinosaurs. This finding and estimation of Microraptor feathering consistent with an ornamental function for the tail suggest a centrality for signaling in early evolution of plumage and feather color.

For as long as dinosaurs have been known to exist, there has been speculation about their appearance. Fossil feathers can preserve the morphology of color-imparting melanosomes, which allow color patterns in feathered dinosaurs to be reconstructed. Here, we have mapped feather color patterns in a Late Jurassic basal paravian theropod dinosaur. Quantitative comparisons with melanosome shape and density in extant feathers indicate that the body was gray and dark and the face had rufous speckles. The crown was rufous, and the long limb feathers were white with distal black spangles. The evolution of melanin-based within-feather pigmentation patterns may coincide with that of elongate pennaceous feathers in the common ancestor of Maniraptora, before active powered flight. Feathers may thus have played a role in sexual selection or other communication.
